Section control is a relatively new technique for checking the speed of vehicles on public roads. Unlike conventional speed meters, which measure the speed of a vehicle at one point, section control systems determine the average speed over a long distance (at least 500 meter).

The goal of section control is to improve the traffic safety. Moreover section control reduces the number of speed violations invariably.

The government has successfully implemented section control systems on various motorways, including the A2 (near Breukelen) and the A13 (between Rotterdam and The Hague).

There are also a number of mobile section control systems in use. With these, the average speed of a (suspicious) vehicle is measured from a police car, which is following the vehicle in question.

NMi has been closely involved in the development of section control systems in the Netherlands, right from the beginning. We advise governments and manufacturers about the technical requirements for reliable and accurate measurements. In addition, we tested and certified all the section control systems which are in use, in accordance with the statutory specifications.
