Taximeters calculate the fare for a taxi ride based on the duration and the distance of the journey. Because these devices are used for trading purposes, they can only be placed on the market if they have been verified in accordance with the specifications of the Weights and Measures Act.

In addition, taximeters must undergo a re-verification every year.

NMi has all the facilities to verify or re-verify your taximeter, in accordance with the statutory requirements.

Two phases

The (first) verification of a taximeter consists of two phases. The first phase takes place in our test laboratory, and is usually applied for by the supplier. The second phase takes place after the taximeter has been installed in the taxi, and is applied for by the taxi driver or owner.

Verifications and re-verifications of installed taximeters take place at the taxi company premises and at other fixed locations throughout the country, and are only carried out by appointment.

You can have your taximeter re-verified from two months before the expiry date of your verification certificate. The new verification certificate is valid for a year after the expiry date of the old verification certificate.

If your taximeter satisfies the statutory requirements, then you receive a certificate of approval from us. You must be able to produce this certificate upon the request of the Inspectorate for Transport and Public Works in the event of an inspection.

For further information about the verification or re-verification of taximeters, please contact NMi Certin’s Verification department: T +31 78 633 2320 or keuringen@nmi.nl.
