Independent conformity assessment and verification bodies play an important role in legal metrology.

In the Netherlands NMi Certin B.V. is designated as the legal metrology service to perform certification, type approval and verification tasks on basis of the Dutch Metrology Law.

European Level 
Also in other countries various organizations have been designated for the execution of one or more of these tasks. Nowadays the EU is one single market for non-automatic weighing instruments. Most of the national type approval and verification bodies have been entered in Brussels as 'Notified Bodies' for the execution of the European Directive on Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments. The WELMEC-site contains a list of Notified Bodies. Periodically the official Journal of the European communities publishes an update with respect to all European Directives in force.
