The national and international acceptation of calibration certificates is very enhanced by an independent accreditation. In this procedure the competence of calibration laboratories is assessed in an independent way.

Accreditation activities in the Netherlands are performed by the RvA, the Dutch Council for Accreditation. RvA also publishes an overview of accredited laboratories and their working areas. On the European level RvA participates in the European Organization for Accreditation EA, and globally in ILAC.
