The Netherlands is member of the European Union. Therefore all Directives issued by the European Commission have to be fully implemented in the Dutch legislation.
In the field of metrology so far one European Directive is in force, i.e. the Directive on Non-Automatic Weighing Equipment (90/384/EEC, amendment 93/68/EEC). A more general Directive on Measuring Instruments (MID) is publshed at 30 April 2004 as:" Directive 2004/22/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 31 March 2004 on measuring instruments". The focus on metrological aspects will be improved in other directives as the Low Voltage Directive and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive. The IVD-directive even insists that the instruments, used by clinical chemical tests, shall be traceable to higher standards (IVD=In Vitro Diagnostics).
