EURAMET is a cooperative organisation between the national metrological organisations in the EU, EFTA states, the EU-accessie states and the European Commission. The participating metrology institutes intend to collaborate in EUROMET, with the objective of promoting the co-ordination of metrological activities and services with the purpose of achieving higher efficiency. Now other European states may apply to membership based on certain published criteria.

EURAMET was formally established by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by participating States in Madrid, Spain on 23 September 1987 to become operative from 1 January 1988. Since, the MOU was amended in 1995 and 1998.

The main aims of EURAMET are:

  • to encourage co-operation in the development of national standards and measuring methods;
  • to optimise the use of resources and services;
  • to improve measurement facilities and making them accessible to all members.
