Inspection and market surveillance on compliance with the metrological legislation is the task of the government. Within the EU the member States perform this in various different ways.

In the Netherlands Verispect B.V performs the inspections. On behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs Verispect B.V. employs a policy of random inspection of measuring instruments. The inspection is based on agreed and contracted service level agreements. Generally measuring equipment used for consumer sales is to be inspected every three years and in the industrial sector every four years. Thus Verispect has good statistics for equipment in use and inspection failure rates.
