The removal of trade barriers is an important side goal in legal metrology. Both on a global and on a regional level one tries to achieve harmonisation of requirements and unambiguous interpretations.

OIML
The international Organization for Legal Metrology OIML aims at a global harmonization of requirements.

WELMEC
Within the European Union and the European Free Trade Association the deliberations among the legal metrology organizations take place within WELMEC. Central European organizations participate as an associate member. Also in other continents similar platforms exist.

Conformity Assessment Bodies en Notified Bodies
Independent conformity assessment bodies and verification organizations play an important role in legal metrology. In the Single European market of the EU most of them have been entered in Brussels as a 'Notified Body'.

Inspection and market surveillance
Inspection and market surveillance on compliance with the metrological legislation is the task of the government. Within the EU the member States perform this in various different ways. In the Netherlands Verispect performs the inspections in order of the ministry of Economic Affairs.
