In all developed countries the principal responsibility for metrology lays with the central government It is mostly designated to ministries like Economic Affairs, Trade and Industry, Technology or sometimes Consumer Affairs.
In the Netherlands the Ministry of Economic Affairs is responsible both for the maintenance, development and distribution of measurement standards and for the legal metrology aspects (consumer protection). This ministry also is responsible for the introduction of the European Directives related to the metrology field. The specific Directorate involved is Market Operation.
