Any manufacturer or producer wishes to manage his production processes as well as possible, for example by using the raw materials at optimum efficiency, by reducing waste materials and carefully organizing their disposal, and by minimizing the rejection of finished products. Without good measurement this is impossible.

The economic effect of improved use of measurement standards and reference materials in chemical industry in The Netherlands is estimated 0.2 to 0.5 %. On a turnaround of 8 billion EURO this means 16 to 40 million EURO per year.
