Even though the Milestones in Metrology IV conference is eight months away, the online meeting has already started on LinkedIn group “Milestones in Metrology”. Today, over 225 members follow or join discussions including topics such as “When is metrology ‘legal’ metrology?”, MID the standard for gas measurement devices in Europe?", “Weighing manufacturers to go beyond MID and NAWI Directive limits?”, “The European Commission has announced to publish the note regarding the 10V/m-issue for NAWI’s by the beginning of November. They also announced a transition period of 1 year.”

Participate or just follow discussions

Milestones in Metrology is a platform for manufacturers, end users, authorities and metrological institutes to meet and discuss topics on (legal) metrology. But why wait for this conference to start the discussion? New media, such as LinkedIn, make it easy to start a discussion and comment on it. Moreover, it is also possible just to follow the discussions without participating in it. Suggestions for topics that shouldn’t be missed at the conference can also be posted on the group’s discussion board.

Current discussion Oil & Gas

Mr Jacob Freeke of Elster – Instromet started the following discussion:
Is a 'twin meter setup' for large Natural Gas Custody Transfer measurement worthwhile? A Twin Ultrasonic Meters with differing path geometries set-up, or a combination of Turbine and Ultrasonic for large natural gas custody transfer metering stations and calibration facilities? What do you think? Will OPEX benefits outweigh CAPEX?

Consideration may be given to ‘twin’ Ultrasonic Meters with differing path geometries but this is not recommended as a factor of a subsequent mutually exclusive events analysis.

The number of comments and suggestions shows that there are different solutions to any problem. Add your comment on LinkedIn or just follow it!

Current discussion Weighing

Eveline Janse of NMi started the discussion:
The European Commission has announced to publish the note regarding the 10V/m-issue for NAWI’s by the beginning of November. They also announced a transition period of 1 year.

Rumours in the market started after the European Commission announced that harmonised standard EN-45501 (test B 3.4) does not give presumption of conformity for immunity to radiated electromagnetic fields as the test level is only 3 V/m. The state of the art is 10V/m as stated in OIML R 76-1:2006. No transition period was announced.

Mr Brian Tidesly immediately commented:
Is this a rumour or fact? I have a number of clients who are concerned that there will be a large cost to industry to retest existing Type Approved products to meet the new requirements especially if it applied retrospectively. It was of concern when it was thought the transition period was going to be 18 months so your suggestion of only 12 months will be even more alarming.

This shows that it is a hot topic and the solution is not apparent yet. Add your comment on LinkedIn or just follow it! Updates will also be published on LinkedIn.
