As agreed at last Welmec WG10 meeting, a discussion paper regarding an alternative test method for purely digital self-service devices was submitted to the working group for an e-mail vote. With no votes against, the paper can now be submitted to the Welmec committee for voting and publication.
Although there currently is no published guide, NMi has decided to begin testing on the alternative method, provided the applicant so desires. Effectively the core of testing then no longer lies on hardware, but rather on the SSD’s software. The reasoning being that the performance of purely digital devices is characterised more by its software than by its hardware, provided that it meets certain specific conditions. Effectively this in turn means a large potential cost saving on approval tests for self-service devices.
Another advantage is that it could open the route to certify pre-MID self-service devices under MID. Thereby it could solve a number of so-called mix-and-match issues, which seemed unsolvable until now.
