The EUROPEAN UTILITY WEEK, which took place from 3 to 5 November 2015 in Vienna, was the ultimate place for us to talk to those involved in the measurement of electricity, gas, water and heat. In an inspiring, international athmosphere we exchanged ideas and learned more about the main problems that are faced by manuafcturers and utilities.
Our booth, positioned at a central location in one of the two exhibition halls, formed a home base for NMi’s Utility team. From here, we were able to introduce many of our new services. Two of which attracted the interest of the public in particular: Power Quality and Accelerated Reliability.
Power Quality meters are installed to monitor the stability of the grid by detecting interruptions, overvoltages, fluctuations or voltage unbalances. It is essential that the meters measure the power quality phenomena in the same way and that their outcome is comparable. At NMi power quality meters can be examined in accordance with the IEC 61000-4-30. Using a specific test setup, the meters are exposed to all power quality phenomena listed in this IEC standard. By comparison between meters under test and a reference meter, an analysis is made as to whether each meter fulfills the requirements of the IEC 61000-4-30.

Accelerated Reliability is a testing method that can be used to compare life characteristics of different utility meters. The reliability aspect of the installed meters is a very important parameter when preparing a business case during meter rollouts. The tests are performed in accordance with IEC 62059-31-1. During this accelerated reliability testing, samples taken from a defined population are operated beyond their normal operating conditions. They are examined under several different stress conditions, like elevated temperature and humidity.
